MGTA Art and Animation

Welcome to Art and Animation!

During this course we will make a Video Game character that we can play in our own actual video game, in the form of a Lego Minifig:

Lego

Below is a breakdown of our week. The files you need for the course are included, listed by day:

Day 1:

Today we learn about modeling in 3D. We’ll demonstrate making objects in 3D shaping them into whatever form we can imagine.

Specifically, we will learn how to build a Lego Minifig.

To get started, follow these steps:

Step 1:  Create a folder on your USB drive and name it Anim.

Step 2:  Download the Zip file provided below:

anim1_day01.zip

Step 3:  Unpack the files contained in the zip file to the Anim folder.

Day 2:

Today we continue to build our Lego character, including creating some fun accessories.

Day 3:

Now we get to paint our Lego character. We’ll be using a 2D paint program, like Photoshop, to customize our character.

Day 4:

Now that we have our character built and painted, it’s time to bring it to life!

Today we’ll add a rig (like a skeleton) so we can pose it.

Follow the steps below:

Step 1:  Download the Zip file provided below:

Day 4 Rig.zip

Step 2:  Unpack the files contained in the zip file to the Anim folder.

After we have added the rig, we’ll use it to animate the character!

Day 5:

Today we’ll finish the animations we started on Day 4, and then put our Lego character into Unity and hook it up so we can play!

Follow the steps below:

Step 1:  Download the Zip file provided below:

Unity Scripts

Step 2:  From the Zip file, unpack the folder called Lego Project to the Desktop.

Keep the Lego Project folder and all of the files inside of it intact.

BONUS:

Below are some terrain textures for those advanced game gurus who would like to do some terraforming:

EXTRA BONUS:

Below are a few videos that will walk you through the entire process of integrating your Lego character into the Unity game engine.

The first video shows you how to create terrain on which you can put your Lego character:

Next, this video talks about setting up the Lego character itself:

And finally, this video teaches how to save your project as an executable game:

Have fun making your game!
